Best portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters

Eleven instruments compared on the specifications that actually decide the purchase: pipe range, accuracy, transducer temperature, battery life, ingress protection, logging and price. Transit-time and Doppler are compared in separate tables, because their accuracy specifications are not measured the same way. Every figure is taken from the manufacturer's published datasheet and dated.

The portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters most often specified in North America split into two groups by measurement principle. The transit-time instruments are the Panametrics TransPort PT900, Badger Meter Dynasonics DXN-5P, Fuji Electric Portaflow-C FSC-4, Ultraflux UF801-P, Ultraflux Minisonic II P, Katronic KATflow 200, Micronics Portaflow 330, Greyline PTFM 6.1 and METRI Ultra ProLite. The Doppler instruments are the Compu-Flow C6 Portable and Greyline PDFM 6.1. The Dynasonics DXN-5P is a hybrid and appears in both groups.

These two groups are not interchangeable and their accuracy figures are not comparable. Transit-time needs a clean acoustic path and is specified on reading. Doppler needs suspended solids or bubbles to reflect from and is specified either on reading or on full scale depending on manufacturer. Choose the principle first, then the instrument.

Which tier do you actually need?

Four questions separate a $4,000 portable from a $12,000 one. If you answer no to all four, the value tier will do the job and the premium instrument is a waste of budget.

  1. Is any pipe thick-walled, lined, or larger than 48 in? Thick wall, cement lining and very large bore all attenuate signal. This is the single most common reason a cheap instrument reads nothing at all on a pipe a premium one handles. If yes, you need premium signal processing and a large-bore transducer set.
  2. Is the fluid aerated, dirty, or carrying solids? Transit-time needs a clean acoustic path. Above roughly 2 to 5% entrained gas or solids by volume, most transit-time instruments lose lock. If yes, you need Doppler or a hybrid.
  3. Does the number have to survive being challenged? Billable energy audits, custody disputes and regulatory submissions need traceable calibration, a defensible data record and diagnostics you can show. If yes, buy premium, and buy the calibration certificate.
  4. Will it run above 80 °C or below −20 °C at the pipe wall? Transducer temperature ceilings are the hardest limit on this page and no amount of budget works around the wrong transducer.

Four noes means clean water or glycol, schedule-standard steel or plastic pipe, moderate size, occasional use, and ±2% is fine. That is most HVAC balancing, most pump verification and most municipal spot-checking, and it is well inside the value tier.

Why transit-time and Doppler are compared separately

Transit-time and Doppler measure different things and their accuracy specifications are not written on the same basis. Comparing a Doppler meter's ±2% against a transit-time meter's ±1% and concluding the transit-time instrument is better is a category error — on raw sludge the transit-time meter reads nothing at all.

The specifications are measured differently

The Greyline PDFM 6.1 specifies ±2% of reading, the Compu-Flow C6 Portable specifies ±1% as a function of flow profile, and the Dynasonics DXN-5P in Doppler mode specifies 2% of full scale. That last one matters: 2% of full scale on a meter ranged to 12 m/s is ±0.24 m/s regardless of what you are reading, so at 1 m/s it is effectively 24% of reading. Full-scale and of-reading specifications cannot be put in the same column honestly.

Doppler needs something to reflect from

The PDFM 6.1 states the threshold explicitly: solids or bubbles of at least 100 microns, at a minimum concentration of 75 ppm. Below that there is nothing to return an echo and the instrument has no reading to give. Point a Doppler meter at clean filtered water and it fails, which is the exact mirror image of pointing a transit-time meter at sludge.

Doppler needs far less setup

This is the underrated advantage. A transit-time instrument needs pipe material, wall thickness, liner type and liner thickness entered correctly, and a 1 mm wall thickness error on a 50 mm pipe puts roughly 4% of area error into the result. The PDFM 6.1 needs none of that — clamp on the single head, enter the internal diameter, read flow. On a pipe with unknown provenance that is a meaningful accuracy advantage in practice, whatever the datasheets say.

What the accuracy specification does not tell you

A published ±1% figure is a laboratory number measured on ideal pipe with a known wall thickness and fully developed flow. Real installed uncertainty on clamp-on ultrasonic is more often 2 to 5%, and every instrument on this page is subject to the same physics.

Low velocity is where accuracy quietly collapses

Micronics is the only manufacturer in this comparison that publishes the degradation openly: the Portaflow 330 is specified at ±0.5 to ±2% of reading above 0.2 m/s, but ±6% of reading below 0.2 m/s. That is not a Micronics weakness. It is what happens to every transit-time instrument at low flow, and most datasheets simply decline to state it. If your line runs at 0.15 m/s, no instrument on this page will give you 1%.

Small pipe costs you accuracy too

The Panametrics PT900 is specified at ±1% of reading on pipe of 2 in and above, and ±2% on 0.5 in to under 2 in. Micronics publishes ±3% for pipe ID between 13 and 75 mm. The transducer separation gets short relative to the wavelength, and the timing difference you are trying to resolve shrinks. Small-bore clamp-on is genuinely harder, and the premium instruments do not escape it either — they just document it.

Wall thickness error is the biggest error you control

Volumetric flow is velocity multiplied by cross-sectional area, and area is derived from the internal diameter you type in. Get wall thickness wrong by 1 mm on a 50 mm pipe and you have introduced roughly 4% of area error before the instrument has measured anything. This is why an integral or bundled wall thickness gauge matters more than the last half percent of quoted accuracy. What about the sub-$1,000 imported units?

Generic imported handhelds sold on marketplaces for $300 to $900 use the same transit-time physics as the instruments above and will produce a plausible-looking number on clean water in standard steel pipe. What you lose is signal diagnostics, calibration traceability, transducer breadth and support.

The practical failure mode is not that they read wrong. It is that you cannot tell when they are reading wrong. The instruments in the table above give you signal strength, gain, quality index or a raw waveform, so a bad reading announces itself. A unit with no diagnostics returns the same confident three decimal places whether the transducers are coupled properly or not.

They are reasonable for a hobbyist, an irrigation check, or a rough indication where being 10% out costs nothing. They are not reasonable for anything you will bill for, defend, or make a capital decision on. And they are not reasonable on thick-wall, lined, or large-bore pipe, where they will typically fail to acquire at all.

Frequently asked questions

Which portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter is the most accurate?

Published accuracy is effectively tied. The Panametrics PT900, Badger Dynasonics DXN-5P, Fuji Portaflow-C FSC-4 and Greyline PTFM 6.1 all specify ±1% of reading, while the Katronic KATflow 200, Micronics Portaflow 330, METRI Ultra ProLite and both Ultraflux instruments reach ±0.5% after process or field calibration.

Choosing on the headline accuracy number is a mistake, because installed uncertainty is dominated by pipe data entry, transducer placement, flow profile development and signal quality — not by the electronics. A ±0.5% instrument on a pipe with an assumed wall thickness is less accurate than a ±2% instrument on a pipe that has been gauged.

The specification worth comparing is the calibrated figure and what it takes to get there. Field calibration against a reference gives roughly half a percent on most of these instruments. Without it, plan for 2 to 5% in real conditions.

Which portable covers the widest range of pipe sizes?

The Ultraflux Minisonic II P covers DN10 to DN10,000, or 0.5 in to 393 in, which is the widest range in this comparison. The Katronic KATflow 200 reaches 6,500 mm, the Fuji Portaflow-C FSC-4 reaches 6,000 mm and the Micronics Portaflow 330 reaches 5,000 mm.

At the other end, the Greyline PTFM 6.1 stops at 1,200 mm (48 in) and the Badger Dynasonics DXN-5P stops at 3,050 mm (120 in) with large-pipe transducers. Neither is a defect — both are sized for the North American water and building services market where 48 in covers the great majority of lines.

Range is only real if you buy the transducers. Almost every wide-range figure on this page assumes a multi-transducer set. A single standard transducer pair typically covers something like 50 mm to 2,000 mm, and the extremes cost extra.

Doppler or hybrid instruments only. The Compu-Flow C6 Portable and Greyline PDFM 6.1 are both clamp-on Doppler and need suspended solids or entrained gas to reflect from. The Badger Dynasonics DXN-5P runs transit-time and Doppler in one instrument and switches automatically on signal quality.

Every other instrument in this comparison is transit-time only. Transit-time needs a clear acoustic path through the fluid; suspended solids and entrained gas scatter the beam and the instrument loses lock. Published tolerance is roughly 2% by volume for the Greyline PTFM 6.1, under 5% aeration for the Ultraflux UF801-P and under 10% for the METRI Ultra ProLite.

The Greyline PDFM 6.1 publishes the Doppler threshold from the other direction: it needs solids or bubbles of at least 100 microns at 75 ppm minimum concentration. Between those two limits — too dirty for transit-time, too clean for Doppler — there is a genuine gap, and a hybrid is the only single-instrument answer.

Compu-Flow C6 or Greyline PDFM 6.1 for dirty fluid?

The Compu-Flow C6 Portable specifies ±1% against the Greyline PDFM 6.1's ±2% of reading, and covers pipe to 500 in against the PDFM's 15 ft. The PDFM 6.1 counters with an IP67 aluminium enclosure, a 12-million-point logger and sleep-mode logging that runs for weeks.

Power is the practical separator. The Compu-Flow C6 runs on AC, DC, solar or battery, which suits a permanent or semi-permanent deployment on a tailings or sludge line. The PDFM 6.1 runs 15 hours continuous on its internal pack and is built around being carried.

Both need the same thing from the fluid: reflectors. Neither will read clean filtered water.

Which portable clamp-on flow meter handles the highest pipe temperature?

The Panametrics PT900 leads with optional transducers rated to +400 °C, against a +150 °C standard set. The Katronic KATflow 200 reaches +250 °C, the Fuji Portaflow-C FSC-4 and Micronics Portaflow 330 both reach +200 °C, and the Badger Dynasonics DXN-5P reaches +176 °C with its DTTH high-temperature transducers.

The METRI Ultra ProLite stops at +80 °C, which rules it out on steam condensate, hot thermal oil and most high-temperature process lines. That is the clearest capability gap between the value tier and the premium tier on this page, and it is not something a firmware update or a better operator can work around.

Temperature ratings are per transducer, not per instrument. Check which transducer set is actually in the quote — the headline figure on a datasheet is usually the optional high-temperature option, priced separately.

Which portable clamp-on flow meter has the longest battery life?

For continuous logging the Ultraflux UF801-P leads at up to two months using its sleep function. Among conventional handhelds the Katronic KATflow 200 runs 24 hours on standard NiMH AA cells, the Micronics Portaflow 330 runs 20 hours, the Panametrics PT900 runs 18 to 20 hours and the Badger Dynasonics DXN-5P runs 6 to 9 hours.

The KATflow 200's AA cells are worth more than the raw hours suggest. Every other instrument here uses a proprietary internal pack, so a flat battery on a remote site ends the day. AA cells can be bought at a filling station.

The DXN-5P's shorter runtime is the price of a 7-inch colour touchscreen and hybrid operation. On mains or vehicle power it runs indefinitely, so this matters for spot-checking on foot rather than for parked survey work.

How much does a portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter cost?

Published prices in this comparison run from $3,999 for the METRI Ultra ProLite to $9,999 for the Ultraflux UF801-P. Most premium manufacturers do not publish list prices at all — the Panametrics PT900, Badger Dynasonics DXN-5P, Fuji Portaflow-C FSC-4, Katronic KATflow 200 and Greyline PTFM 6.1 are all quote-only, configured by transducer set.

One useful public data point: RS Components lists the Micronics Portaflow PF333 energy variant at £4,562.76 excluding VAT, roughly $5,800 as of July 2026. That sits about where the mid tier lands once a transducer set is included.

The number on the quote is rarely the number you pay. Transducer sets, high-temperature options, wall thickness gauges, energy or BTU kits, extended cables and calibration certificates are all separately priced, and a fully configured premium portable commonly lands well above the base instrument price.

Is the Badger Dynasonics TFXP still available?

The Dynasonics TFXP is the legacy Badger Meter portable, introduced in 2006, and has been superseded by the Dynasonics DXN-5P hybrid. Buyers searching for a TFXP replacement are generally routed to the DXN-5P, which adds Doppler operation, RTD energy inputs and a 1 GB logger.

The same generational shift happened at Panametrics: the TransPort PT878 was retired and replaced by the TransPort PT900. If you are comparing against an older quote or an existing instrument in your own toolroom, check which generation the specification refers to — accuracy and interface both changed.

Existing TFXP transducers are not interchangeable with DXN transducer sets. Budget for the full kit rather than assuming a transmitter-only upgrade.

Should I rent a portable clamp-on flow meter instead of buying one?

Rent when the measurement is a one-off, when the job is a single survey with a defined end date, or when the pipe is outside the range of the instrument already owned. Buy when portable flow measurement is recurring work, typically more than three or four deployments a year, at which point purchase costs less than repeat rental.

Renting also solves the transducer problem. A rental kit arrives with the transducer set matched to the pipe, which is exactly the part buyers most often under-specify when purchasing.
